Terry Slattery has a distinguished career in networking and is well known for his contributions to the Cisco CLI, being the second person to obtain the CCIE, providing consultation to many organizations, and the list goes on. If it’s happened in networking, there’s a very good chance that Terry has experience in it. Today Terry joins us to to talk about how he got started into networking and how he’s navigated a very successful career in networking.

At different points in our careers it can be difficult to ask for help. Maybe the expectation is that your customer is paying for expertise and you have to demonstrate it. Maybe it’s just embarrassing to admit when you don’t know something. Nobody can know it all though, so knowing when and how to ask for help will save you trouble and pain in your career. Listen in as Kevin Myers shares his thoughts on when, where, and how to ask for help.

As the networking world continues to embrace automation and orchestration, some of the terms used to explain this new way of doing things remain a little fuzzy. In today’s episode we’re going to look specifically at Infrastructure as Code and by the end we hope to define what it is as well as what it is not, provide some relevant examples of it in action, and clear up as much confusion as possible about what it means to network engineers.

Today we’re introducing a new twist to the Network Collective Short Take, the community spotlight. One of the reoccurring themes in the listener survey was that you get to hear a lot about what our guests know but don’t get to know anything about them or how they came to have the knowledge that they do. This is an easy problem to fix so occasionally we’ll be profiling individuals in the industry who are doing good work. Today, that individual is Nick Russo. Nick has been a long time contributor to Network Collective and has participated in some of our most popular episodes. Listen in as we talk about how Nick Russo got his start in networking and how his journey brought him to where he is today.

Tunnels and overlays are all the rage in software-defined networking but 128 Technology thinks there is a better way forward. Without tunnels or overlays, 128 can provide all the features you’ve come to expect from an SD-WAN solution and more. Listen in if you would like to hear how they can do all of this without encapsulation, offering far smaller overhead yet still keeping your data secure in transit. Once you’ve watched the overview here, you can find an even deeper dive into their technology at their website https://128technology.com or you can view the full day Networking Field Day Exclusive event recordings at http://tnc.li/128tech

Cloudflare come out strong, pointing the finger at Verizon for shoddy practices putting the Internet at risk. It didn’t take long for karma to come around and for Cloudflare to have their own Internet impacting outage from a mistake of their own. In this episode we talk about that outage, the risk of centralization on the Internet, managing MSPs when trouble strikes, and whether or not agile processes are forgoing security in favor of faster releases.

The initial hype of SD-WAN claimed that MPLS was dead as SD-WAN was going to remove all need for SLA based circuits. Now that we’re several years in and have some experience under our collective belts, we take a look at whether or not the original hype was correct and what real world customers are doing when it comes to selecting circuits for their SD-WAN networks.

Is the traditional networking hardware/software dynamic broken? Do monolithic network stacks make your infrastructure fragile and difficult to manage? In this episode we speak with SnapRoute’s Glenn Sullivan and Adam Casella about how they are looking to change that with their cloud native network operating system. Built from the start on a modern microservices architecture, SnapRoute aims to improve network agility and remove fragility from your infrastructure. Listen in as we talk about the details of this interesting new approach to networking.

Thank you to SnapRoute for sponsoring today’s episode and supporting the content we’re creating here at Network Collective. Please take a moment to head over to https://snaproute.com to learn more about how SnapRoute can improve your network infrastructure.

From cost savings to unprecedented simplicity, no claim seemed to be off limits when it came to controller driven networks. Now that’s it’s 2019 and some of the dust is settling we wanted to have a chat with a couple of engineers who have been in the thick of it and know what it’s really like to design, implement, and operate Software-Defined WANs.

In this sponsored Network Collective Short Take, Brandon Heller, Co-Founder and CTO of Forward Networks, joins Network Collective to talk about how network verification and modeling are empowering network operators to increase efficiency, reduce mistakes, and shorten the mean-time-to-resolution when troubleshooting network issues.

Forward Networks does this through a complete and accurate mathematical model of the way your network operates, allowing you to quickly assess traffic flows and operational issues in your network without needing to query multiple devices manually.

Having an accurate model of your network also empowers you to validate changes before ever touching your production environment, giving you confidence that the change you are implementing will achieve the desired outcome.
